RAF Bruggen was one of the RAF's German 'clutch' Stations along with Wildenrath, Laarbruch, Geilenkirchen, Rheindhalen and RAF(H) Wegburg. An additional station was used until 1996, the former Luftwaffe airfield of Gutersloh.
The clutch stations were constructed in the 1950s and boasted the most modern facilities available in the RAF. With the end of the cold war, their purpose was over and they started to close in 1992.
Bruggen was the last to close, 17 Sqn disbanding in 1999 followed by 14, 9 and 31 Sqns. 37 Sqn RAF Regiment was the last operational RAF Sqn to leave Germany in October 2001 and Bruggen finally closed in 2002, being handed over to the British Army as 'Javelin Barracks' |
